Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club Feb 2008
Well, the Quail Ridge club finally has a place to pitch. As with all new buildings,
there are a few bugs to take care of - electric, roofing, loose siding, heat pumps
and a host of other things. The kitchen is in working condition the beer license
is not.
I want to welcome all of the new members to the club. I hope you are having a lot
of fun pitching. We have fifty-six members that are new or have returned after an
absence of a year or more. To the
new pitchers - I want to invite you to get involved with running the club. We have
many jobs that have to be done. If you can help with keeping score, cleaning, game
related sales, tournament or assistant tournament director, concession help or any
of the many things that come up, your help will be greatly appreciated.
We have two leagues pitching. Monday night is a mixed league with about eighty pitchers
and the Wednesday night men’s league, also with about eighty pitchers. The summer
league sign up forms will be available soon. So let your friends know that they
can pitch in air-conditioned comfort through the summer months. At present the club
is open on Monday and Wednesday from Noon until 10:45 PM. On Saturday and Sunday
from Noon until 5:00 PM.
The twenty-fifth annual St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will
be held on Mar 15th, at the American Legion Post 312, 2500 Raymond Dr.
in St. Charles. Tickets are available from Carol Howard or Dave Molitor ($20.00).
Congratulations to club member Ray Nadler who will be inducted into the St. Charles
County Hall of Fame. Be sure to get your tickets for the Banquet and help support
the County Hall Of Fame.
The horseshoe pitching for the St. Charles County Golden Games will be at the Quail
Ridge HC. Eligibility for the Golden games, any person who will be fifty years of
age or older before April 30, 2008. The deadline is March 31, 2008. Horseshoe pitching
will be held on May 8, 10:00 AM. Registration forms are available at the club. The
cost is $25.00 and that will allow you to participate in as many events as the schedule
allows except golf, which requires an additional fee of
$20:00.
May 3rd and 4th will be the Six Pack Invitational tournament.
Sponsored by Harvey Wobbe and the Holiday Inn (Wentzville). Holiday Inn is the host
motel for the events at the NHPA Hall of Fame building.
There will be sixteen of the top short
distance pitchers and sixteen of the top full distance pitchers competing. Have
you ever seen anyone pitch an 80%, 90% or a perfect game? This is your chance to
observe the best pitchers in the country. Come and see how they do it. Maybe you
will pick up a tip or two.
If you are new to the game and would like some help with your pitching, talk to
the league directors or one of the club officers. We have several people that would
be glad to work with you. If you have been around for a while and you just cannot
get to that next level maybe we can help you.
The tournaments are mostly full. We can pitch eight classes of eight players in
a day using two pitching times, 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The Tournament Directors could
use a few more people to sign up as scorekeepers. After observing the first three
tournaments, the need for additional assistant directors is evident. To keep everything
moving smoothly, at least three people are needed to run a tournament.
If you can help, let one of the officers know or sign up on the Assistant
Tournament Director’s List, indicating a preferred tournament.
One of the most common responses I hear when I suggest that a new pitcher sign up
for a tournament is, “I’m not good enough to play in tournaments”.
We have a place for you. Players
are seeded in the tournament by ringer percent. We have sixty-four places
for each tournament. You either have or will establish a ringer percent.
Once you have a ringer percent, your stats are put into the computer. When
you sign up for a tournament, you will pitch against seven other players with ringer
percents that are close to yours. The more entries you have for a tournament, the
tighter the classes. That being said, The State Tournament, which is the largest
tournament in the state, will be held at the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club over Labor
Day weekend. Please consider signing
up to play. Unless you are a new to the NHPA you need to have at least three events
to qualify for the state tournament. Lets see if we can make this one of the largest
state tournaments ever. The cutoff date for the state tournament is not set, but
it looks like Aug.2nd.
We want to thank Dave and Bea Feldewerth for their years of service to the club.
Bea was in charge of sending cards to club members that were going through difficult
times. Dave has been the club treasurer for the past eight years and did a great
job.
Jim Howard was voted in as the new treasurer. We appreciate him taking on this tremendous
job.
Dorie Gillette has volunteered to take care of the health and welfare cards for
the Quail Ridge club. If you know of a club member in need of a “Get Well or Sympathy
card”, give Dorie a call at
636-456-1311. If you cannot
get in touch with Dorie, let Carol Howard know at 636-441-7679 or E-Mail her at
<horseshoejc@sbcglobal.net >
or Bob Reininger at 314-469-1103.
